I was at the beach recently with a friend and our kids. The inevitable shop talk started up and during the conversation I was asked what I though of the new WWF file format. Not knowing too much about the format I decided some research was in order. At a basic level its a document format that does not allow [...]

Have You Heard of the WWF Format?

I was at the beach recently with a friend and our kids. The inevitable shop talk started up and during the conversation I was asked what I though of the new WWF file format. Not knowing too much about the format I decided some research was in order.
At a basic level its a document format that does not allow printing. Similar to office PDF production you download the virtual printer and produce WWF format documents. Here is more information from the wesbite http://www.saveaswwf.com/
Interesting concept and a push towards the paperless office. Its a good intuitive and I guess awareness is the key. My feeling is that we (people in general) are still a tactile bunch and like the feeling of something in our hands. The growth of tablets and eReaders is certainly making changes and reducing paper used. As the video says one less sheet of paper could mean one less tree consumed or more CO2 pumped out during production.
CMSIP PrinterCUB will continue to promote awareness within printing environments. Previously I have blogged about the transform capabilities of PrinterCUB. Through the Transform tools users have the ability to view their documents output settings and select to change these based on suggestions made by PrinterCUB. For example if a document is submitted as a multiple page singe sided document PrinterCUB will suggest the document be made a duplex saving both paper and cost.
Extending on this function PrinterCUB features forced document outputs for all users or users of a specific user group. No matter when the user selects within the driver the document will always be outputted to the forced setting. Forced settings include forcing duplex or printing specific fiel formats in black and white only.
So I think this WWF format is not a bad idea. Interesting though the viewer installed on my Mac allows the WWF document to be saved as a PDF and printed. Wonder why …….?
