by: Kier Morrison

I was at the beach recently with a friend and our kids. The inevitable shop talk started up and during the conversation I was asked what I though of the new WWF file format. Not knowing too much about the format I decided some research was in order. At a basic level its a document format that does not allow [...]

PrinterCUB Simplified User Printing

by: Kier Morrison | in: BEAR News, Product News/Updates | on: 04/08/2010

Conscious of the need assist system managers to control printing we are also conscious of the need to ensure the printing process for users is as simple as possible.

Often this will extend to the driver settings. Many of the sites we assist in implementing solutions will have a default driver installation. For example all drivers are set to print as black and white with duplexing. Any changes required by the user mean users need to access the driver find the setting and make the change. Now this might sound simple enough for system administrators or power users but given the complexity of some drivers it can be a little daunting for some users and a potential time waster while they search for the setting they want.

At BEAR we saw this as a potential opportunity to develop a tool to assist clients. What we developed was a feature for PrinterCUB called Transform. Here’s how it works.

Firstly each user with PrinterCUB belong to a user group and each user group has permissions and controls applied. Transform can then be configured in the following ways:

Firstly PrinterCUB can force all documents for the user to print in a certain format ignoring any driver changes made. For example Black and White and Duplex

Secondly all documents can be forced to print in a certain format then PrinterCUB provides the user with a popup offerin simple controls to allow changes to the document by the user. See the following screen shot.

Finally PrinterCUB Transform is intelligent enough to provide options that are relevant to the  document. If the document is a single page document only then the duplexing option is not provided. If the document contains no colour then no colour control are provided to the user.

The popup provides for fully customisable text and site branding.
